sign

A small, grassy island in the middle of the water. The only thing on the island is a large billboard-like sign, as wide as the island, with the words "here be dragons" on it in rough, weatherbeaten lettering. The sign is pretty weatherbeaten itself, with worn edges and a chunk missing from the lower right corner. The only other thing visible are wispy clouds behind the sign. The drawing is gray-green ink on a light gray-green background. The clouds and some of the water texture are white.

A hunched-over creature holds a large, triangular sign up to its face, covering its head entirely. The sign looks like one of those warning signs with the exclamation point in a triangle, but this design is slightly different: the dot in the exclamation point has been replaced with a wide, frowning mouth. The drawing is bright, neon green on a black background.

A chunk of rock like a large boulder, flat on top, hanging in space. The top flat area is grassy, as though this is a chunk of the ground that got blown into space for some reason. Planted in the ground is a large billboard-like sign with the word "diner" in all-caps and an arrow pointing right.

A small, cratered asteroid hangs in space. It's roughly spherical, although heavily lopsided and pockmarked. Sticking out of the top of it is a large, billboard-like sign with the word "closed" on it. The sign is about as wide across as the asteroid; this is either a very big sign or a very small asteroid. Behind the asteroid stretches the vast, starry expanse of deep space.

It is very late evening or very early morning. Standing in a grassy meadow is a giant round sign, maybe 10 feet in diameter: a smiley-face that appears to be constructed from metal and plastic, like a sign for a gas station or roadside attraction. The sign is falling apart: panels are missing or broken, revealing the metal framework underneath, and plants dangle from the frame. In the background is the suggestion of a foggy tree line. Standing to the right of the sign is a person, shining a flashlight up at it. The darkness and the beam from the flashlight throw the seams and contours of the sign into sharp relief, making the smile empty and menacing. As Lon Chaney once said, "There's nothing funny about a clown in the moonlight."

A broad, desert expanse; the heat of a desert afternoon. Mountains shimmer in the distance. You're standing on a grassy hilltop overlooking a plain. Placed on the hill, for no apparent reason, is a tall, weathered sign with the word "diner" on it. A bird perches on the sign; a vulture circles overhead.

A tall sign—the size of a two-story building—out in the middle of nowhere with "diner" written on it. Some of the letters are dim, neon bulbs; others aren't lit at all. Also affixed to the sign pole is a street light, casting a dull light. The atmosphere seems to be a wet, foggy day. A figure stands under the street light, perhaps waiting for someone. Another figure approaches through the fog. Off in the distance is a dim, barely visible tree line, suggesting a forest.

A figure in a heavy coat and boots, holding a walking stick. The figure's head is a triangular warning sign: orange border with a black exclamation point in the center.
