A person stands against a bright orange background, holding a large white sign that looks like a speech balloon. The sign is covered with stars and writing of various sizes and colors: red, blue, and orange. The only recognizable symbols are stars and exclamation points. The composition of the sign vaguely suggests an American flag. The painting is signed "Chris Silverman".

The middle of nowhere: a foggy, barren place that could be in the world of the living or somewhere on the outskirts of it. The ground is a charcoal gray, fading into a haze of fog. A small trail winds through it. Ahead, sticking up out of the fog, is a tall signpost with an oval "Open" sign at the top of it. The sign looks like something you'd see in the window of a gas station: red, all-caps LED letters, framed by a circle of blue LEDs. Standing in front of it, approaching it on the trail, is the dim outline of a person. The person is less than half the size of the sign. A single bird, barely visible in the fog, circles in the sky. The painting is signed "Chris Silverman".

An aged signpost that consists of several rough-looking slats of wood nailed to an uneven log stands in the middle of a green meadow. The sky is clear and blue. In the background can be seen two small houses with red roofs. The topmost sign points to the left, although the way it's mounted, it is also pointing towards the sky. The word "cancel" is roughly painted on it in drippy white letters. The second sign points to the right and has the word "reject" in red, similarly rough lettering. The last sign points to the left and slightly down and has the word "OK" in light blue lettering. The painting is signed "Chris Silverman".

A red field under a dark blue cloudy sky. Planted in the middle of the field is a tall sign with the faded letters on it that spell "diner". Attached to the signpost is a street lamp, casting a lurid yellow light. To the left of the sign post is a rickety telephone pole, propped up by another, smaller pole. A tangle of wires coming from the telephone pole connect to the sign. Sitting on top of the sign are a row of birds. More birds are in the sky.

A very tall, dilapidated sign. The sign is an arrow shaped like an uppercase L, with the arrowhead at the base of the L, pointing right. The word "motel" is printed on the L in large, faded, red letters. The sign is weatherbeaten, with holes and patches on it, and is supported by a few rickety support beams. It appears to be in the middle of a desert: flat brown land, golden sky, yellow sun. The arrowhead is pointed at a small birdhouse directly to the right of the sign. Perched on top of the sign is a black bird.

A scene at night, somewhere in a remote, natural area. The ground appears to be covered with low trees, weeds, and shrubbery. Rising up out of the ground is a sign with the word "open" on it in glowing pink letters. The sign is tall, like a sign for a gas station. Approaching the sign in the background are multiple hazy figures who appeared to be carrying powerful flashlights, like a search party. This is a mostly blue and black drawing.

A desolate, grassy area at what is either sunrise or sunset. The sky is pink and purple. Standing in the middle of the grassy area is a tall pole. At the top of the pole is a large smiley-face sign. It looks like the sort of sign a gas station might have: this giant round smiley-face that appears to be made of metal. The pole is supported by another pole right next to it, and a glowing white street lamp is mounted on it, extending out to the right. To the left of the two poles is a small electrical box. The leftmost supporting pole has some cables and pipes mounted on it.

A mountain in the middle of nowhere, under a blazing yellow and crimson sky. Planted at the very peak of the mountain is a signpost with two signs: one pointing forward, reading "OK", and one pointing backwards, reading "Cancel".

An open, swampy area in a forest. It's the late afternoon; the sky is pink with the sun lowering towards the trees. There is an overgrown path with dead, branchless trunks of trees next to it. In the distance is visible a tree line. Crossing the path, heading to the right into the part of the drawing that suggests an open bog, is the shambling, hunched silhouette of something with two sharp, pointy ears and a humanoid hand. Closest to the viewer is a large, weathered yellow sign that says "area closed". A hawk wheels in the sky.

A small, grassy island in the middle of the water. The only thing on the island is a large billboard-like sign, as wide as the island, with the words "here be dragons" on it in rough, weatherbeaten lettering. The sign is pretty weatherbeaten itself, with worn edges and a chunk missing from the lower right corner. The only other thing visible are wispy clouds behind the sign. The drawing is gray-green ink on a light gray-green background. The clouds and some of the water texture are white.

A hunched-over creature holds a large, triangular sign up to its face, covering its head entirely. The sign looks like one of those warning signs with the exclamation point in a triangle, but this design is slightly different: the dot in the exclamation point has been replaced with a wide, frowning mouth. The drawing is bright, neon green on a black background.

A chunk of rock like a large boulder, flat on top, hanging in space. The top flat area is grassy, as though this is a chunk of the ground that got blown into space for some reason. Planted in the ground is a large billboard-like sign with the word "diner" in all-caps and an arrow pointing right.

A small, cratered asteroid hangs in space. It's roughly spherical, although heavily lopsided and pockmarked. Sticking out of the top of it is a large, billboard-like sign with the word "closed" on it. The sign is about as wide across as the asteroid; this is either a very big sign or a very small asteroid. Behind the asteroid stretches the vast, starry expanse of deep space.

It is very late evening or very early morning. Standing in a grassy meadow is a giant round sign, maybe 10 feet in diameter: a smiley-face that appears to be constructed from metal and plastic, like a sign for a gas station or roadside attraction. The sign is falling apart: panels are missing or broken, revealing the metal framework underneath, and plants dangle from the frame. In the background is the suggestion of a foggy tree line. Standing to the right of the sign is a person, shining a flashlight up at it. The darkness and the beam from the flashlight throw the seams and contours of the sign into sharp relief, making the smile empty and menacing. As Lon Chaney once said, "There's nothing funny about a clown in the moonlight."

A broad, desert expanse; the heat of a desert afternoon. Mountains shimmer in the distance. You're standing on a grassy hilltop overlooking a plain. Placed on the hill, for no apparent reason, is a tall, weathered sign with the word "diner" on it. A bird perches on the sign; a vulture circles overhead.

A tall sign—the size of a two-story building—out in the middle of nowhere with "diner" written on it. Some of the letters are dim, neon bulbs; others aren't lit at all. Also affixed to the sign pole is a street light, casting a dull light. The atmosphere seems to be a wet, foggy day. A figure stands under the street light, perhaps waiting for someone. Another figure approaches through the fog. Off in the distance is a dim, barely visible tree line, suggesting a forest.
