exit

A green room, dark on the inside. White light streams through an open doorway. Framed in the doorway is a running figure wearing a fedora and carrying a briefcase. If you find yourself in Europe and looking for a quick exit, look for a sign that resembles this image.

A tall, oddly narrow brick building in the middle of a snowy field. The sky is slate-gray, the way it is when snow is right around the corner. The building is roughly three stories tall, with a small closet-like door at the base and a single small window in the top right, directly under the pointed roof. The roof is covered with snow. The door is covered with illegible graffiti. The window is boarded up. Bolted to the right side of the building is a metal pipe chimney. While the building appears abandoned, there is smoke rising out of the top of the chimney, and numerous footprints in the snow around the door, implying that someone is inside. Most strangely of all is the sign—a slab suspended from a metal arm, similar to a shopkeeper's sign—extending off of the left side of the building, with the word "exit" on it. Behind the building is the blurry mound of a snow-covered hill, and then nothing: just the heavy gray sky. The building is drawn in black ink.

A small, grassy hillock. At the very bottom of the drawing, set into the hill, is the top of an arched steel door. Most of the door is not visible, cropped by the lower edge of the drawing. The door has a round window set in the top center of it. A large eye is peering out of the window, looking up. Planted in the top of the hillock is a weed-covered, dilapidated sign with the word "exit" in rough uppercase lettering. There are a few wispy clouds in the sky. The drawing is indigo ink on a yellow background.
